You Are Here

You Are Here Amanda Dalton.jpg

A geography classroom: maps on the walls, a hanging globe, a battered desk… YOU ARE HERE invited visitors to discover “worlds you never dreamt were there”. At the heart of this interactive installation, exploring psychogeography, journeys and our sense of place, was an eerily lit “classroom” of apparently unremarkable old school desks. A composed soundtrack of distorted playground sounds played in the distance. Once the lids were lifted, the extraordinary and unexpected was revealed. Journeys, pathways, destinations on and off the beaten track, topographies of memory, landscapes of dreams and maps of the imagination…

Created by 37 community groups, schools and individuals YOU ARE HERE was co-curated with theatre designer Liz Ascroft and sound designer Peter Rice.

“Absorbing, fascinating – mundane made art. One of the best exhibitions I’ve seen in a long time.”
